Every July 10, Nikola Tesla Day marks the birthday of the inventor and electrical engineer born in 1856 in Smiljan, in what is now Croatia. The date is recognized by Tesla societies and, in some places, by official proclamation. It is a day to look past the memes and appreciate a working engineer whose ideas still hum inside every wall socket you use.

Tesla emigrated to the United States in 1884 and quickly became a central figure in the electrification of the modern world. His biggest contribution was a practical system for generating and distributing alternating current, including the polyphase induction motor. That system won out over direct current for large-scale power delivery, and it is the reason electricity can travel efficiently across long distances to reach your home.

A little history

Tesla briefly worked for Thomas Edison before the two parted ways, setting the stage for the so-called War of the Currents between Edison’s DC and the AC system Tesla developed and George Westinghouse backed. AC prevailed because it could be transformed to high voltages for transmission and lowered again for safe use. One of its landmark early triumphs was helping power a large hydroelectric plant at Niagara Falls in the 1890s.

He was also a genuine showman and a restless thinker who filed a long list of patents and experimented with radio, wireless transmission, and high-frequency devices like the coil that bears his name. Some of his later ambitions outran what he could fund or finish, and he died in relative obscurity in a New York hotel in 1943. His reputation has grown enormously since.

You do not need a lab to celebrate. Read a bit of his own writing or a solid biography instead of trusting a viral post, since Tesla is one of the most mythologized figures in science and a lot of what circulates online is exaggerated or simply wrong. If you like hands-on learning, wire up a simple circuit or set up a small Tesla coil kit and watch the physics happen in front of you. Teachers and parents can turn July 10 into a lesson on how the grid works, tracing the path from a power plant to the lamp on the table. And if you pass a hydroelectric dam or a science museum, stop in.

However you spend it, take a moment to notice the invisible infrastructure Tesla helped design. The quiet, reliable current running through your walls is one of the most consequential inventions in history, and today is a fine day to give it some thought.
