The part that makes them easier to catch

To spot a natural rainbow, keep the sun at your back and look toward falling rain or mist. Rainbows always sit in the part of the sky directly opposite the sun, roughly 40 degrees up. Early morning and late afternoon give you the best angle, because the low sun lifts the arc higher.

On a sunny day, set a garden hose to a fine mist and stand with your back to the light. Aim the spray across the sunbeam and a small rainbow will hang in the droplets. Move your hand slowly and you can watch the colors slide as the angle shifts.

A glass prism, or even a clear glass of water on a windowsill, will bend sunlight into its full spectrum. Catch the beam on a white wall or a sheet of paper so the bands show up clearly. It is the same physics as a sky rainbow, just close enough to touch.
