On October 29, 1969, a student named Charley Kline sat at a computer in a lab at UCLA and tried to send a single word — “login” — to a machine at the Stanford Research Institute. This was ARPANET, a research network funded by the U.S. Defense Department’s Advanced Research Projects Agency, and it was the ancestor of the internet we know now.

The system crashed after just two letters. So the first message ever transmitted between two computers over this new network was, fittingly, “lo.” They rebooted and got the full word through about an hour later. It’s a wonderfully human origin story: an ambitious idea, an anticlimactic bug, and people quietly fixing it and trying again.

The internet’s first word was an accidental one — “lo,” as in “lo and behold.”

From those two nodes, the network grew. Over the following decades came email, the TCP/IP protocols that let different networks speak the same language, and eventually the World Wide Web that made all of it usable by ordinary people. No single person invented the internet; it was built in layers by many hands over many years.
